An individual profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was publicly declared, sparking debate about potential gains made from confidential information of the US operation.

Market Movement in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the leader would be no longer in control by the end of January surged in the hours before President Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

A particular user, which registered on the site in December and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436,000 from a initial bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the prior Friday.

Yet the odds had increased to over 10% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the first hours of Saturday, pointing to a sudden change in positions right before the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a trade based on inside information," said a financial reform advocate.

Several of other traders also earned tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Grows

Politicians are starting to take note.

A bill put forward on the start of the week would prevent public officials from making trades on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

Market Background

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in recent years, with traders able to wager on everything from elections to political events.

Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.

Insider trading is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the event betting arena.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
