Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks The Continent's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity is driven by stronger productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap prompts a vital question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. However, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
